Kira Wang

Former Musical Director


Kira Wang is a 17 year old senior at the Catlin Gabel School in Portland, Oregon. She began playing cello with Valdine Mishkin at the age of four and currently studies with Sarah Koo. Kira was the winner of the 2019 Portland Youth Philharmonic Concerto Competition, performing Bloch’s Schelomo with the orchestra in March, 2019. Kira soloed with both the Beaverton Symphony Orchestra and the Jewish Community Orchestra in 2018 after winning their young artist competitions. Recently, she was chosen as a Quarterfinalist for the 2022 XI International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Moscow, Russia. During recent summers, Kira has attended Center Stage Strings, the Castleman Quartet Program, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute, and the National Youth Orchestra-USA. She has participated in solo masterclasses with Johannes Moser, Alban Gerhardt, Richard Aaron, Anthony Elliott, Peter Wiley, Amanda Forsyth and David Finckel.

Kira believes strongly in promoting music diversity and having students learn and play music that celebrates their identities. Kira joined Project Prelude as a member in 2019 and has been a part of the organization ever since. She is excited to continue this year as Musical Director.
