Shawn Lim

TBA Division Director

Shawn Lim is a sophomore at Syosset High School in Long Island, NY. He started playing the violin at the age of 6 and currently studies under Laura Broverman. Shawn enjoys teaching and working with children, and is eager to serve his community by encouraging young musicians to explore the world of music. In recognition of past efforts working with children, he has received the President’s Gold Volunteer Service Award.

During his musical career, Shawn has been a member of various orchestral groups. He has been with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (MYO) since 2019, serving as concertmaster in the ’21 - ’22 and ’22 - ’23 seasons. Shawn has also played in NMEA (Nassau Music Educators Association) and LISFA (Long Island String Festival Association) orchestras, serving as concertmaster and principal 2nd violin.

Shawn’s passion for violin encouraged him to learn a second instrument, the piano. He quickly grew to enjoy playing the piano, and was recently selected to perform a solo alongside the MYO Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to playing in orchestras, Shawn has been in smaller chamber groups, including a woodwind and string ensemble that participated in the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society competition this year. Shawn has performed as a soloist at various venues, including Carnegie Hall. He has participated in several competitions, including the Manolov International Competition, where he won 1st place in the violin category and 2nd place in the piano category in 2022.

Shawn has instructed students under his district’s Tri-M Music Honor Society Mentoring Program and volunteered at church summer camps. As a Project Prelude division director, he is excited to work with elementary school students and share the gift of music with them.
